(Tallahassee, Fla., April 8, 2014) – The Florida Businesses for a Competitive Workforce (FBCW) today announced more members have joined the coalition which supports anti-discrimination legislation impacting the LGBT community. Leaders from Marriott International, the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association and Bilzin Sumberg are part of the coalition which encompasses more than 15 of the state’s largest employers.
Florida State Sen. Joe Abruzzo (D-Royal Palm Beach) and Reps. Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo) and Joe Saunders (D-Orlando) are prime sponsors of the Florida Competitive Workforce Act, SB 348/HB 239, which prohibits discrimination among the LGBT community in employment, housing and public accommodations.
Recruiting and retaining talent is critical to the state’s long-term business success, and coalition members understand that Florida employers must attract qualified and diverse applicants who reflect the diverse population of the state. The link between strong anti-discrimination laws and the ability to draw the best and the brightest is the reason that 84 percent of the nation’s largest companies have adopted comprehensive anti-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity.
